Maha Kumbh 2025, a once-in-a-lifetime event returning to Prayagraj after 144 years, will be held from 14 January to 26 February 2025. This grand spiritual gathering considered the largest in the world, has immense significance in Hinduism (Sanatan Dharma). Millions of devotees, saints, and pilgrims from across the globe will gather at the Triveni Sangam—the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers—to take a holy dip believed to cleanse sins and lead to moksha (liberation).

The Significance of Maha Kumbh

Maha Kumbh is deeply connected to the ancient legend of the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean), during which drops of Amrit (nectar of immortality) fell at four sacred places: PrayagrajHaridwarUjjain, and Nashik. The 2025 Maha Kumbh is extraordinary because it marks a 144-year cycle, making it the rarest and most auspicious Kumbh of this era. According to astronomy, the Kumbh Mela is held when Jupiter and the Sun enter specific zodiac signs.

The event features Shahi Snan (royal bathing rituals) by revered saints, spiritual discourses, and religious ceremonies, drawing millions of seekers searching for divine blessings and enlightenment. Maha Kumbh is not just a pilgrimage; it is a celebration of Hindu heritage, faith, and the eternal quest for spiritual awakening.

Taking a dip at the Triveni Sangam during these auspicious dates is believed to cleanse sins and bring spiritual blessings:

  • 1st Shahi Snan – 14 January 2025 (Makar Sankranti)
  • 2nd Shahi Snan – 29 January 2025 (Mauni Amavasya)
  • 3rd Shahi Snan – 3 February 2025 (Basant Panchami)
  • 4th Shahi Snan – 12 February 2025 (Maghi Purnima)
  • 5th Shahi Snan – 26 February 2025 (Mahashivratri)

Our Journey to Mahakumbh 2025

The idea of visiting Mahakumbh first came to us in November last year. As we were planning our spiritual journey, we initially decided to visit Ayodhya for darshan and then head to Prayagraj for the grand Mahakumbh. Around that time, social media was flooded with reels and YouTube videos about the upcoming 2025 Mahakumbh, showcasing its spiritual significance, the massive gathering of devotees, and the divine atmosphere. Watching those visuals filled us with excitement, and we finally decided that we couldn't miss this once-in-a-lifetime event.

After seeking the blessings of Shri Ram in Ayodhya, we boarded the Vande Bharat Express to Prayagraj Junction. What an experience it was! The train's modern amenities, comfortable seats, and excellent hospitality made our journey smooth and enjoyable. Most of the passengers were fellow devotees, all heading towards Mahakumbh with immense enthusiasm and devotion. The entire atmosphere inside the train felt like an extension of the spiritual journey, with people chanting prayers, discussing their pilgrimage, and sharing their excitement about taking a holy dip in the Triveni Sangam.

Our main goal is to take a holy dip in the Triveni Sangam, where the sacred rivers Ganga, Yamuna, and the mystical Saraswati converge. Bathing in these holy waters is believed to cleanse one's soul and bring spiritual enlightenment. Along with this, we are eager to experience the vibrant energy of the Kumbh Mela, where millions of devotees, sadhus, and spiritual seekers gather from across the world. The sight of Naga sadhus, the chanting of Vedic hymns, the grand processions, and the colorful religious rituals are something we look forward to witnessing and capturing through our camera.

Apart from the spiritual aspect, the Mahakumbh is also a cultural spectacle. The fair is known for its mesmerizing decorations, the aroma of delicious prasad, the echoing sounds of bhajans, and the presence of great saints sharing their wisdom. We want to document these beautiful moments, not just for ourselves but also to share them with the world through videos and photographs. This journey is not just about travel; it is about connecting with our roots, experiencing India's spiritual heritage, and being part of something truly divine.

Come, Let Us Tell You—What We Explored at the Kumbh Mela!

Our journey to the grand Kumbh Mela was truly magical! Arriving just after Makar Sankranti, we stepped into a vibrant spiritual atmosphere.

At 9 AM, we left our hotel near Prayagraj Railway Station, finding the streets alive with pilgrims, locals, and devotional chants. A quick ₹30 e-rickshaw ride took us toward the Kumbh Mela grounds, weaving through bustling alleys lined with tea stalls and religious shops.

Reaching the drop-off point, we joined thousands walking toward Triveni Sangam. The air echoed with temple bells and hymns, as people from all walks of life united in devotion. Here, faith transcended all boundaries—only the sacred dip at the holy confluence remained.

After walking approximately 3 km, we reached the first grand entrance gate, which had "Mahakumbh 2025" proudly displayed at the top. This was a major checkpoint where arrangements for food and refreshments were available. Families and groups traveling together had already booked e-rickshaws in advance, while others had arrived from different states in their own vehicles.

Right next to the gate stood an eye-catching hoarding featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, welcoming devotees to the grand Kumbh Mela. The towering display quickly became a hotspot for visitors, with many stopping to take selfies alongside the images of Modi and Yogi, capturing their memorable journey at this spiritual extravaganza.

From this gate, we had to walk another 1.5 to 2 km before reaching Kachhap Dwar. As the day progressed, the crowd kept growing, filling the air with an electrifying energy. Stepping inside Kachhap Dwar, we were greeted by a vast open field where the grand arrangements of the Kumbh Mela unfolded before our eyes.

To ensure order and safety, Uttar Pradesh Police were stationed throughout the area, guiding the crowd and maintaining discipline. The entire Kumbh zone was divided into sectors, making navigation easier for the millions of pilgrims. For those feeling exhausted from the long walk, water coolers were installed at various points—just drop ₹1, and you could fill your bottle with fresh drinking water. Small food stalls lined the pathways, offering quick snacks to keep energy levels high.

As we continued our journey, we arrived at Nandi Dwar, another significant checkpoint. Walking along this path, we could see the holy Ganga River flowing gracefully to our left. One of the most striking sights was the Pipa Bridge, a temporary floating bridge built across the river. Massive iron pontoons, resembling giant capsules, were placed in a sequence on the water, supporting a sturdy wooden walkway. Thick ropes were secured on both sides to ensure safety. These bridges connected different ghats and sectors, allowing devotees to cross over to areas where tent cities and other arrangements had been set up for the pilgrims.

Amid the gently flowing waters of the sacred Ganga, devotees can be seen immersing themselves in a holy dip, seeking spiritual blessings. Unlike the bustling ghats, this spot remains relatively less crowded, as most pilgrims make their way towards the revered Triveni Sangam.

As we moved towards the sacred Triveni Sangam, we encountered a mesmerizing sight—saints, sages, and Naga sadhus from various Akharas marching in grand processions. Their vibrant rallies and spiritual foot journeys created a divine atmosphere. Devotees paused in reverence, bowing with folded hands, seeking blessings from these ascetic souls on their sacred path.

Finally, we arrived at the revered Triveni Sangam. The sight before us was a bustling crowd, and when you're amidst such a gathering, it’s hard to tell if you’ve truly reached your destination. Only from a distance does the grandeur of the sacred confluence become clear. This is where three holy rivers—Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati—merge, giving it the name Triveni Sangam (Triveni meaning three, and Sangam meaning confluence). While Saraswati remains invisible, the contrast between the deep blue waters of the Ganga and the dark currents of the Yamuna is mesmerizing.

With excitement, we secured our belongings—camera, footwear—inside a plastic bag and stepped into the sacred waters. The moment we touched the river, a shiver ran through us—the water was ice-cold, despite the blazing sun overhead. The experience was pure bliss. Children, youngsters, and elders alike immersed themselves in the holy waters, taking sacred dips. The moment felt truly special, made even more serene by the fact that the crowd wasn’t overwhelming.

After taking a holy dip in the sacred Triveni Sangam, we filled a bottle with the holy water to take home as a blessing. These bottles are easily available nearby for just ₹20. Letting the sun dry us off, we then set off towards the historic Akbar Fort.

Right next to it, we found a boating point, where we managed to get a boat ride to explore the Sangam up close. The government has set a fixed rate of ₹100 per person, but the boatmen insisted on ₹500. Despite the bargain, the experience was worth it! Drifting on the sacred waters, surrounded by breathtaking views, made for an unforgettable ride.

After an amazing boating experience, we enjoyed some delicious food and took a short rest before heading out to Kali Ghat in the evening. Kali Ghat offers a mesmerizing Water Laser Show completely free of cost, running from 7 PM to 9 PM.

As night fell, the Yamuna Bridge transformed into a breathtaking sight, glowing with dazzling lights, which reflected beautifully on the shimmering waters below. The entire scene felt surreal—a perfect blend of nature, heritage, and modern illumination.

As the clock strikes 7 PM, the crowd begins to gather, eager to witness the spectacle. Street vendors keep the energy alive, offering lemon tea, biscuits, roasted chickpeas, and other light snacks to visitors. The atmosphere buzzes with anticipation.

Right on time, the water laser show begins, bringing to life the legendary tale of the Kumbh Mela, as described in ancient Hindu scriptures and texts. The cool evening breeze, the rhythmic flow of the river, and the breathtaking visuals on the water create an experience no less grand than an open-air theater. It’s a perfect blend of history, devotion, and technology, leaving everyone in awe.
